"Where were you when the world stopped turning on that September day?" a simple question from an Alan Jackson country song, yet everyone who was adolescent age and older on September 11, 2001 can tell you their answer. As for me, I was in my second period Spanish class. I remember a classmate walking in and asking the class if they heard what had happened. She then started explaining what she had heard. The teacher, being concerned as anyone would be would turned on the tv, and there it was. The tvs did not get turned off for several days. It was such a shocking event that no one could stop watching. Here we were, the greatest country in the world, just blindsided with devastation.
Today, we have a whole generation of young adults and youth who do not have a memory of where they were on September 11, 2001. Why? Because they were not even born yet. They don't know the feeling of uncertainty and devastation that an event of 9/11's magnitude brought the preceding generations. Maybe this is why sometimes it feel like our country forgets what it was like that day and the days following. It is up to those of us who experienced that day to not only keep the memory alive, but to teach our youth the lessons we learned that day. Lessons about love for your neighbors, pride in your country, sacrifice, unity, and most importantly turning to Jesus in all things.
We've all heard that history repeats itself. Whether or not we disagree with this statement, I'm pretty sure that we can all agree that there are a lot of terrible things happening in our world right now. When you stop and look around the world, or go down all of the rabbit holes that are out there, it can make you fearful to even go outside, however, when you stop and look to Jesus he will take those fears and give you peace that surpasses all understanding. There's nowhere in the bible that says life will be easy with nothing rainbows and unicorns, in fact it's very opposite of that. We can count on tough and devastating times happening, but we can count even more on God's love and protection.
With all that being said, this 25th anniversary of 9/11, pray for those who are hurting, thank the first responders you come across, and point as many people as you can to the hope and peace only found in Jesus!
